Byline: LORNA HUGHES ECHO Reporter @lorna_hughes

A WALLASEY man has become an online sensation after being photographed picking up litter from New Brighton's marine lake.

A photo of Peter Flowerdew, 73, in a boat surrounded by rubbish, was posted on a Facebook group for Wallasey by Kevin Hughes on Tuesday. He wrote: "He should not have to do this. Top fella."

The picture has attracted over 800 likes, with comments praising Mr Flowerdew for his actions and calling him a "true gentleman".

The ECHO tracked him down - and can reveal he is a volunteer for The New Brighteners, a group committed to keeping New Brighton's beaches, and its immediate environment, clean and litter-free.

The father-of-three and grandfatherof-seven, who joined the group three years ago, is a former industrial engineer and shared reading facilitator. He completed a degree in humanities in 2006 and is passionate about helping his local area.

Mr Flowerdew joked he was a "marine dustman" but said the response to the photo had been "lovely".

He said: "Dave Peddie, the leader of the New Brighteners, told me about it being on Facebook. I did see a gentleman taking photos but that's not unusual. I didn't even look at it. I tend to concentrate on my job in the lake.

"I didn't do it for praise, I do it because I like being out on the water. I believe in the environment and most of all I hate seeing it like that.

"The things you find in there are incredible, from fishing lines to buckets and spades and a full can of beer.

"The reaction really surprised me, but the things people have said are lovely."

OFFER " Dave Peddie, a New Brightener committee member, said he hoped the response to the photo would encourage people to help keep New Brighton clean and tidy.

He said: "People are picking up litter from Egremont right around to Harrison Park - we just get on and do it."
