Residents' relief at repainting order.

A SHOCKING pink house which shocked local residents must be painted over to look less radical, council officials have ordered. The brightly painted house in Swansea's Brynmill Road comes complete with advertising logos for an events company. It even includes a giant web address along the house's pine end. Owners Condor Properties said it checked with its architects before going ahead with a pounds 3,000 makeover for the house, which is normally used as student accommodation. But local residents were unhappy and now Swansea Council has confirmed it has rejected a bid by Condor Properties for retrospective planning permission for the pink building. Irene Mann, who lives in the area and has campaigned against what she calls "studentification" of the Brynmill and Uplands area of Swansea, said yesterday she was pleased. She said: "It is not what you would call a subtle colour and if Swansea is serious about attracting tourism here, it has to control the way properties and areas look. "It is essentially a giant advert and the problem is that could have set a precedent and we could have had dozens of similar properties here." Condor Properties director Alan Savoury said yesterday the house had undergone expensive renovations as part of its new look. He said: "I will be discussing the situation with my architects to see where we go from here. "It's disappointing, but we felt we were acting appropriately."
