Residential flat gutted.

MUSCAT: A residential apartment in Muttrah near the 'Qalhat' building was partially gutted when a fire broke out in it yesterday afternoon. No casualties were reported.

Two fire engines and dozens of civil defence officials were pressed into service to contain the raging fire.

"The fire began at around 2:30 pm. We were all scared that it would spread to our buildings. The timely action of the civil defence officials averted a major accident," residents in neigbouring buildings told Times of Oman.

Tragedy averted

The gutted apartment was a rented accommodation of an expatriate working in a private firm in Ruwi.

The fire which started from the bedroom reportedly spread to the other rooms. As the family was in the kitchen they made a safe exit and a major tragedy was averted.

Another woman resident who saw the fire ran for life.

The fire continued for nearly one hour. The reason behind the fire is still unknown.

According to statistics released by the Civil Defence officials, they handled 163 fires while personnel executed 128 rescue operations between October 29 and November 11.
