While malt whisky only accounts for a small percentage of overall whisky volumes, it is an extremely significant growth area and therefore a marketing priority for major spirits producers. The attention malt whisky receives from major spirits groups underlines how important the sector has become to the whisky business, not only because of its premium nature and marketability but also because of the impressive growth the category has been showing. The global market for malt whisk(e)y in 2003 reached an estimated 18.15m litres of pure alcohol (LPA) and moreover the sector is set for further dynamic growth.

This report provides an introduction to production, as well as detailing the distribution of the malt whisky distilleries, the output of Scotch malt whisky, the production from 2000 through to 2003 and the changing stocks of maturing whisky. The leading distillers are covered, providing their turnover, the number of distilleries and the leading malt brands, followed by the major selling brands of malt whiskies in 2003.

There are many companies that are involved in the production of single malt whiskies. Most of these are small operators with just one distillery. The eight companies that are profiled in this report have been chosen because they have at least one brand of single malt whisky in the top 12 best sellers in the world. They include Diageo, Suntory Group, Allied Domecq Plc, Pernod Ricard, William Grant & Sons Distillers Ltd, Edrington Group, Whyte & MacKay Ltd, and Glenmorangie Plc.

For the purpose of this study, six leading whisky producers were asked to talk about their company's marketing strategy for their single malt brands. Their responses are analysed, looking at their global brand strategy and the on-trade versus the off-trade.
