Research Plan Announced to Help Solve Opioid Crisis.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) recently announced The Helping to End Addiction Long-term (HEAL) Initiative, a research plan aimed at finding solutions to the opioid crisis. As part of the initiative, several projects were announced that focus on two main areas--improving opioid addiction treatments and enhancing pain management to prevent addiction and overdose. The Focused Opioid Use Disorder Medications Development Research Project will focus on developing new addiction treatments and overdose-reversal tools. The project will consist of a series of high-impact studies with the goal of developing 15 investigational new drugs, which would then produce approximately five new drug applications to submit to the Food and Drug Administration.
