Republic Engineered Steels' Three Hot Rolled Plants Receive ISO 9002 And QS 9000 Quality Certification

MASSILLON, Ohio, April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Republic Engineered Steels, Inc. (Nasdaq-NNM: REPS) announced today that all of its hot rolled and cold finished plants, along with its special metals plant, are now internationally quality certified. In mid-March, the Company's three hot rolled bar facilities, located in Canton and Massillon, Ohio and Chicago, Illinois, received both ISO 9002 and QS 9000 certification. These latest certifications are in addition to earlier plant certifications. In August 1996, Republic's Special Metals Plant, located in Canton, Ohio, received ISO 9002 certification, and in February of this year, Republic's five cold finished bar plants received both ISO 9002 and QS 9000 certification.

ISO 9002 is an internationally-accepted quality standard for quality management used by over 90 countries throughout the world. Conformance to ISO 9002 standards allows companies to remain globally competitive, distinguishing them from competing suppliers which haven't been so certified. The stringent quality standards required for certification are assessed by independent, third-party organizations.

QS 9000 are specific automotive quality system requirements based on ISO 9000 series standards, developed by the Chrysler/Ford/General Motors Supplier Quality Requirements task force. Republic's hot rolled bars are used in the manufacture of a variety of automotive products such as cam shafts, crankshafts, transmission gears, and axles. Its cold finished products also have numerous automotive applications.

According to Joseph F. Lapinsky, President, Hot Rolled Bar Division, "Republic could not have received certification without the commitment of the total workforce. This recognition underscores our company-wide dedication to quality and continuous improvement." He went on to note that "Republic's CAST-ROLL(TM) facility has made a major contribution to our ever improving quality. As we add new rolling and other equipment, Republic's ability to produce quality product will be further assured." Tim Brown, Director, Quality Improvement Systems for Republic, added, "Meeting these certification requirements strengthens Republic's quality system and, therefore, benefits our customers."

As part of the ISO 9002 certification, Republic will be evaluated every six months by an independent, third-party organization, to assure system continuity and effectiveness. In addition, every three years, the plant will receive a full audit to remain ISO 9002-certified. The QS 9000 system will continue to be improved in conjunction with ISO 9002 standards.
