Reporter joins Register-Guard.
Mark Baker has joined The Register-Guard's regional news team as East Region reporter.
Baker's coverage area will range from the Linn County community of Brownsville in the north to the Douglas County community of Oakland in the south, plus the Highway 58 area up to Willamette Pass and the Fern Ridge area west of Eugene.
Former East Region reporter Matt Cooper will continue to cover the Springfield area and McKenzie and Mohawk valleys.
Former South Region reporter Randi Bjornstad has been reassigned to the county government beat and will additionally cover the Santa Clara area north of Eugene and the Lane Transit District.
Former North Region reporter Joe Mosley is now covering the Eugene City Hall beat.
A native of Eugene, Baker has been a reporter since 1997 and most recently worked at the Eastside Journal in Bellevue, Wash. Before that, he lived in the Deep South, working as a general assignment reporter for The Anniston Star in Anniston, Ala.
He has won three industry writing awards, and his three-part series, "The run of his life," was nominated by The Anniston Star for a Pulitzer Prize in 1999.
A 1980 graduate of South Eugene High School and a 1992 graduate of the University of Oregon journalism school, Baker studied acting in New York City in the mid-1990s.
He is the youngest grandchild of Alton F. Baker Sr., The Register-Guard's publisher from 1927 to 1961.
