Rent law dispute continues.

At midnight tonight, the Albany legislators my be facing yet another expiration of the rent stabilization laws after extending them for six days late last Thursday night.

Governor Cuomo called for a six-day extension of the rent protection laws because the dispute was causing a stalemate on other issues. Among other issues, the Legislature must also decide whether or not to extend laws that deregulate banks and provide insurance coverage to doctors for medical malpractice.

Last Wednesday, with seconds to spare, Cuomo signed a 24-hour extension in the Senate chamber while the week before the chambers had passed a seven day extension.

Meanwhile, the Senate has passed a bill that would provide for decontrol of appartments renting for $2,000 a month or $100,000 income at the expiration of the current lease. The income would be checked in a process similar to what is now used to verify Mitchell-Lama tenant incomes.

Assembly spokesperson Skip Carrier said they passed the latest stright six-day extension of the rent protection laws because the dispute was causing a stalemate on other issues. Assembly spokesperson Skip Carrier said they passed the latest straight six-day extender of the current law with the "obvious intention" to work with the Senate. "We've offered to talk to luxury decontrol, but have been unable to reach an agreement based on that offer," he added.

If the houses have not come to a consensus yet, look for a last second meeting of the minds tonight. The lawmakers are usually long gone by July 4.
