Renewal of Iran's Membership in ECOSOC Shows World Hatred for Bullies.
After Tehran's membership in ECOSOC, the country's mission at the UN headquarters in New York issued a statement to appreciate the friendly countries for their yes-votes to Iran's membership and denounce the US and Canada for their opposition to Iran's fellowship.
"Countries like the US and Canada pressured the ECOSOC to prevent the Islamic Republic of Iran's membership in the Council," the statement said.
"The meaningful decision of ECOSOC on choosing Iran, which came despite the United States' and Canada's sinister attempts and disrespect for the United Nations' procedures for changing the decisions adopted by the regional groupings which, in turn, is a disrespect for diplomatic norms and principles, indicates that the international community also hates dictatorial views (of certain powers) about international issues," it underlined.
A majority of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) members on Friday voted in favor of Iran's membership despite the US and Canada's opposition.
The majority of the 54 ECOSOC member states voted in favor of renewing Iran's membership, according to a press release by the office of the Iranian envoy to the UN.
Prior to the vote, Iran's Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations Eshaq Ale-Habib said that the Islamic Republic would remain an active member in international discussions and debates with or without ECOSOC membership.
Iran has been an active member of the ECOSOC that has resisted attempts by Western countries to bring up "unethical" issues at the UN council.
ECOSOC serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues.
The ECOSOC of the United Nations constitutes one of the six principal organs of the United Nations and it is responsible for the coordination of the economic, social and related work of 14 UN specialized agencies, its functional commissions and five regional commissions. ECOSOC has 54 members and holds one substantive session each year, in July, for a period of four weeks.
Since 1998, it has also held a meeting each April with finance ministers heading key committees of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
The ECOSOC serves as the central forum for discussing international economic and social issues, and for formulating policy recommendations addressed to Member States and the United Nations system.
