Renaissance Fine Plaster: bringing the fine art of decorative plaster to Florida homes.

When Trevor and Pat Charnley relocated from England to Florida's Gulf Coast in 1994, they brought more than their personal possessions: They also brought their business, Renaissance Fine Plaster.

The Charnleys design, manufacture and install such decorative plaster accoutrements as custom-designed fire mantels, chair rails, panel rails, crown moldings, columns (plain and fluted, with Corinthian or Ionic heads), balustrades, ceiling medallions, window dressings and standard and custom niches, plus a wide range of ancillary products, all to complement any taste or architectural style from classic to eclectic.

"It's something of a lost art," explains Trevor, who learned it from a friend in England after having completed a degree in engineering and working as a design draftsman for a time. "The skills required to do this work have largely been lost in the States - in fact, we're the only ones on the Gulf Coast who are doing this work, and many of the moldings we brought with us from the United Kingdom are new to America."

What is not new is the art itself, and the appropriateness of its application in the Florida environment. "Humidity is a big factor here," Trevor points out. "Whether on new construction or a remodeling project, you'll often see after-installation problems with wood that you don't get with plaster. Because wood expands and contracts, there may be bowing or twisting, as well as joints cracking or splitting. Plaster doesn't react like that to this environment." And it's also fire-resistant.

In addition, plaster doesn't require the caulking, rubbing down, or sandpapering that other materials may demand before the final finish can be applied. This not only cuts down on the time involved, but makes it the perfect medium for the application of increasingly popular faux finishes.

Renaissance Fine Plaster works on commercial and residential projects, including renovations, in cooperation with home owners, builders and interior designers to provide an endless array of decorative plaster applications either from their existing designs or custom designed to the individual client's specifications and needs.
