Relief work in progress in cloud burst-hit Uttarakhand.
The Bailey bridge is strong enough to carry tanks, yet light enough to be assembled without the use of heavy tools and machinery.
Speaking to the reporter, Colonel Rajesh Singh, who is responsible for overseeing the project, said that once the Bailey bridges are set up, the connectivity to areas that are currently difficult to reach will be easier.
"We have cleared the road from Uttarkashi to Gangori, so that small cars and our trucks which are carrying the Bailey bridge, can reach the bridge site. All the required materials will reach the site by today or by tomorrow afternoon, and within the next two days we will build a bailey double-double bridge at Gangotri, with which our connectivity from Uttarkashi to Maneri will be complete" said Singh
These portable bridges will also help the road authorities to transport equipment to facilitate the clearing of pathways and roads.
Reportedly over 2,000 families have been affected by flash floods triggered by the cloudburst over Uttarakhand region in the state.
Fatal casualties were believed to be more than 28.
Reportedly, the River Bhagirathi swelled up and caused the flash floods, which washed away hundreds of houses, commercial buildings and two bridges besides damaging standing crops. ( ANI )
