Regulations rev up as wireless grows
'The wireless industry, as a whole, will end up spending billions of dollars to implement or comply with all the regulatory initiatives in discussion at this time,' says David Berndt, program manager in the Yankee Group's Wireless/Mobile Planning Service.
Key issues facing the industry, he says, include wireless number portability, enhanced 911 services, interconnection, pay phone charges for toll-free calls, Universal Service Fund payments, proposed antenna siting laws, calling party pays, automatic roaming, and spectrum auctions.
Carriers have 'a significant opportunity to influence this year's regulatory agenda,' Berndt says. 'Carriers create many jobs in their home territories and this fact can be used to grab the attention of their political representatives.'
