Registration open now for 78-mile cycling challenge.

REGISTRATION is now open for a Beautiful but Brutal 78-mile cycling challenge in County Durham next October.

Following its 2012 debut, the Marie Curie Cancer Care Etape Pennines has quickly established itself as one of the toughest and most gratifying closed-road Sportives in the UK.

The course takes riders through some of the most ruggedly awe-inspiring scenery the North East of England has to offer. With over 2,000 metres of climbing it''s certainly a challenging ride, however, speedy downhill sections and breathtaking views duly reward the hard work.

Entries opened on Wednesday, November 28, and with interest of over 1,000 already registered for just over 3,000 places, prospective participants are encouraged to sign up quickly to avoid disappointment.

James Robinson, managing director of organisers IMG Challenger World said: "With cycling placed firmly in the hearts and minds of the British public, following an incredible sporting year, Etape Pennines offers riders the chance to test their legs over some of the most inspirational and challenging countryside in the UK.

"The passionate welcome of the Etape Pennines to the North East sporting calendar was outstanding in 2012 and we look forward to returning to Durham, where the public really got behind our participants."

The event will take place on Sunday, October 6, 2013. Entry costs PS63 per rider, although there are free places for those raising money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Visit www.etapepennines.co.uk
