Registration For NVWG.
Start prepping to head to the Pacific Northwest, as registration for the 2020 National Veterans Wheelchair Games (NVWG) in Portland, Ore., begins this month.
Registration opens Jan. 6 for the 40th NVWG, which run July 3-8. Sponsored by Paralyzed Veterans of America and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the event is limited to 600 athletes.
Participation is open to veterans with spinal-cord injuries, amputations, multiple sclerosis or other central neurological conditions who require a wheelchair. Physical disabilities must impact mobility and be permanent and measurable.
Exclusionary primary diagnoses include, but are not limited to, pain, arthritis and emotional and psychological conditions. All veterans registering for the NVWG must be eligible to receive care at a VA medical facility.
Registration and medical forms can be downloaded at the NVWG's website, wheelchairgames.org/ athletes/registration. Completed registration forms are accepted in the order they are entered, with priority given to novice athletes. Athlete registration closes April 2020.
Athletes can participate in more than 20 events, including: adaptive fitness; air pistol; air rifle; archery; basketball; boccia; bowling; cycling; disc golf; track and field; motor rally (trivia); 9-ball billiards; powerlifting; power soccer; quad rugby; wheelchair obstacle course known as "slalom"; softball; swimming; table tennis; NVWG Team Challenge; trapshooting; and a nine-hole golf scramble.
If your condition changes between the time you submit your registration and the NVWG in July 2020, you must notify your VA physician and consult with the NVWG staff.
