Registered Nurses Meet in Atlanta: Southeast Regional Meeting.
Gamma Chi Chapter, of Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc., was the support chapter for the Conference. Georgia F. Jackson, MPH, BSN, RN, NE-BC, Chairperson, and Treva Carter, BSN, RN, Co-chairperson, led the support chapter planning committee for the event.
Elcedo Bradley, MEd, MPA, PHN, RN, National President of Chi Eta Phi, Sorority Inc., and Juanita Gibbons-Delaney, MHA, RN-BC, President, Gamma Chi Chapter, along with Honorable C.T. Martin, Council member, Atlanta City Council, District 10, Tawanda Austin, MSN, RN, NEBC, Chief Nursing Officer, Emory University Hospital Midtown were in attendance and brought greetings to the assembly. Additionally, Jacqueline Herd, DNP, RN, NEA-BC, Chief Nursing Officer, Grady Health System brought greetings and recognized the Grady Nurses that are members of the organization. Finally, Marcus Downs, Chief Executive Officer, Georgia Nurses Association and Foundation brought greetings and recognition of the Association's longstanding, working relationship with Gamma Chi Chapter, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.
The Honorable C.T. Martin presented a Proclamation in Honor of the Southeast Region to the Regional Director, Rhonda Hollis, PhD, RN, on behalf of Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and the Atlanta City Council.
The Keynote Speaker was Joan Cranford, EdD, MSN, BSN, Assistant Dean of Nursing, Byrdine F. Lewis School of Nursing and Health Professions, Georgia State University. Mrs. Cranford was a dynamic and energetic speaker with remarks that were encouraging and engaging as she spoke about the disparaging shortage of students entering the profession of nursing.
The SER Conference offered two (2) days of continuing education units.
The 30th Annual Nurse Week Celebration of Gamma Chi Chapter, Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc. recognized nursing excellence and presented three awards this year: Community Service Award, Nursing Achievement Award, and the Johnnie Robinson Nurse of the Year Award.
The Community Service Award is given to one who has implemented a formal health care related service to the community at large, and is a supporter of nursing. The 2017 Community Service Award recipient is Sheila Taylor, RN. She is employed by Emory Midtown Hospital.
The Nursing Achievement Award is given to a Registered Nurse who has rendered distinguished service to nursing education, practice, or administration. The 2017 Nursing Achievement Award recipient is Sarah M. Killian, DNP, RN, NEA-BC. She is an active member of several professional nursing organizations including the American Nurses Association, the Georgia Nurses Association, and Chi Eta Phi Sorority, Inc.
The Johnnie J. Robinson Nurse of the Year Award is the most coveted award given to a Gamma Chi chapter member who has served above and beyond the expectations of membership. The recipient must participate in activities that advance sorority programs, promote nursing legislation, and volunteer with community organizations to deliver health services, programs, and projects. The 2017 Nurse of the Year Award was presented to Gail Stafford, BSN, RN.
