Tynedale were facing an early exit from the Powergen Cup when they trailed Bedford by three points with six minutes of injury time played in Saturday's first round tie.

But Jake White came to the rescue with a drop goal to level the scores at 26-26 and take the game into extra time.

Tynedale dominated the extra 20 minutes and won 41-31 with tries from Jamie Murray and Paul Boston. The previous 80 minutes had been a ding-dong affair with a first-half try for Tynedale from debutante Paul Mooney.

Johnny Williams also scored and Andrew Murray, who kicked 18 points, put them level with a conversion on the interval.

Blaydon had a more comfortable passage into the second round beating Darlington by 34-18 at Crow Trees.

Darlington led with a Dan Miller try.

Blaydon had thrown everything at the opposition but then lost line outs after putting penalties to touch inside the Darlington 22. They got it right when flank forward Matt Cook crashed over from the third scrum. A 13-7 half time lead was increased after the break when Blaydon centre Peter Kilburn went under the posts.

A penalty try was awarded after an obstruction on Blaydon winger Colin Duncan. Blaydon wrapped it up when Richard Armstrong capitalised on a Darlington error near the end.

Darlington Mowden Park thrashed Kendal 70-8. Former Newcastle Falcon Dave Richardson ran in a hat-trick of tries. It was only 21-3 at half time but the visitors had no answer to the speed and power of Mowden's attacks.

Andy Foreman came off the bench to run in two tries as did full-back Iain Dixon.

The other scorers were Tom McLaren, Richard Holdrough, Mark Bedworth and Tasitu Tuhani. Tynedale are at home to Wharferdale in the next round. In the leagues West Hartlepool had a 49-10 home win over Sandal.

Skipper Tim Sawyer got two tries along with Stuart Bennett.

Gosforth had a comfortable 28-19 home win over Ryton who opened the scoring. Halliday, Hampden-Smith, Bennett and Massie scored for Gosforth.
