Northumberland scouts are chartering two boats in the 2005 Tall Ships' Race to give up to 40 young people the chance of a lifetime to be part of a world-class event.

Scouts are busy fundraising, with events such as ceilidhs and carol-singing, grants and corporate support from companies such as property agents Sanderson Young.

Around 120 ships are expected to take part in the race, and an extravaganza of music, entertainment and displays will light up the sky for miles around Newcastle's Quayside and Gateshead Quays. The Parade of Sail will take place on July 28, with more than one million people expected to meet at viewing points along the river.

Chris Eldridge, explorer scout leader, who is co-ordinating Northumberland scouts' participation in the event, said: "This is a fantastic opportunity for our scouts and our thanks go to Sanderson Young for their generous support."
