Reflections, Tehran-style.

Here are a few examples of political commentary by Iranian politicians in recent days:

Deputy Mansur Haqiqatpur, vice chair of the Majlis National Security Committee, says low oil prices are a plot by the United States. "The stage director of this show is the US, whose objective is to damage the Iranian and Russian economies. And Saudi Arabia is helping the Americans," he said. He did not explain why the United States waited until now to lower prices if it was able to control them--or why it ever allowed them to go above $100 in the first place!

Brig. Gen. Mohammad-Reza Naqdi, the commander of the Basij Forces, says he is certain that the armed forces of Islamic State are run by the United States. "Americans devise a lot of backhanded schemes. We are sure that the ISIL command headquarters lies in the US Embassy in Baghdad. This is something they will later write about in books," Naqdi said.

Navy Captain Hossain Sharifi-nasab, commander of the "fleet" of two ships recently sent to anti-piracy duty off Somalia, says that Iran was far ahead of everyone else in fighting Somali piracy. "Iran was the first country that positively responded to the call of international bodies to take part in a campaign against maritime terrorism," he said in an interview last week. There are three international naval groups operating off Somalia--the first was formed in 2006, the second in 2008 and the third in January 2009. Iran dispatched its first fleet of two ships to patrols off Somalia in May 2009.

Mohsen Rezai, a former Pasdar commander-in-chief and now secretary of the Expediency Council, declared that the Big Six countries would never have agreed to sit down and discuss the nuclear program with Iran if it hadn't been for Iran's missile developments. "What brought the Big Six to their senses was Iran's missile power," he said. "If it were not for Iran's missile technology, they would never have even considered talking to us. Our missile power brought them to the negotiating table." He seems to have forgotten that the talks were the idea of the EU 10 years ago and were not initiated by Iran.
