Record View: By-election is a freak show.

THE scale of David Davis's folly must have finally dawned on him yesterday.

"Keep it serious. Keep it serious," he pleaded desperately as he arrived at his East Yorkshire constituency HQ.

Serious? No chance.

The only people who have shown any interest in contesting his vanity by-election are ranting former newspaper editor Kelvin MacKenzie and Monster Raving Loony hopeful Mad Cow-Girl.

And if that's how they line up, the Official Monster Raving Loony Party will find themselves in the unusual position of fielding the most sensible candidate.

The poor folk of Haltemprice and Howden should show their contempt by giving the polls a bodyswerve.

But if they must vote in this unnecessary pounds 100,000 waste of time, we say: Vote Cow-Girl.

OK, her track record's not great. She only polled 149 votes at the last general election in Sunderland South. And she wasn't much help to Nick The Flying Brick in the Crewe and Nantwich by-election last month.

But, crucially, she's not as discredited as David Davis. Or MacKenzie, for that matter.

Whatever happens, the fact he is facing Cow-Girl and MacKenzie proves what a pantomime the former shadow home secretary has plunged himself into.

Far from a referendum on anti-terror laws and civil liberties, he has created a political freak show that is almost as embarrassing for David Cameron as it is for Davis himself.

Gordon Brown called it a "stunt that has become a farce". Sums it up perfectly.
