Yakult Honsha Co., Ltd., Torrance, CA, has received self-affirmed GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) status for its exclusive probiotic strain, Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota in the U.S. This probiotic strain is found in Yakult's products, such as Yakult, a cultured probiotic drink. An independent panel of U.S. experts in toxicology, nutrition and molecular biology rigorously evaluated research studies and toxicology data on Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota, concluding that is is safe for use as a food ingredient.

Silliker, Inc., Chicago. IL. the leading international network of accredited food testing laboratories, announced its microbiology laboratory in Lakeland, FL, has received ISO 17025 certification. ISO 17025, the international standard for testing and calibration laboratories, verifies facilities have complied with the standard's rigorous management and technical requirements.

Lallemand Probiotics, Montreal, Canada, has received Halal certification from IFANCA, the Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of America, for its major yeast and bacteria probiotic products. The certification applies to the yeast probiotic Saccharomyces boulardii and the Probiopcap microencapsulated bacteria strains Lactobacillus Rosen-52; Lactobacillus Rose11-11; Lactobacillus casei Rosell-215; and Bifidobacterium Rosell-175.

Star Scientific, Inc., Glen Allen, VA, through its subsidiary, Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Gloucester, MA, has received IRB approval of the first human clinical study of the safety and effects of nutritional supplementation with Anatabloc in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. This double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled, parallel-group trial will evaluate the safety, tolerability and potential effects of Anatabine dietary supplementation in subjects with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease. Secondary aims are to evaluate the effects of this specially formulated version of Anatabloc (patent pending) on amyloid beta, global outcome and functional measures of Alzheimer's.

Valensa International, Eustis, FL, has announced that its Parry Organic Spirulina ingredient has been certified under USP's Dietary Ingredient Verification Program, and that Parry Nutraceuticals has earned the authorization to use the USP verified mark on product labels and certificates of analysis. The USP Dietary Ingredient Verification Program is a rigorous, in-depth process involving auditing, product testing, document review and continuing surveillance activities. It also covers compliance with current Good Manufacturing Practices regulations.

Robertet Flavors, a supplier of natural flavors and flavor-related ingredients has achieved Safe Quality Food (SQF) 2000 Certification at its Piscataway, NJ, facility. SQF 2000, administered by the Food Marketing Institute (FMI), is an internationally recognized quality certification system providing verifiable assurance that products have been produced in accordance with rigorous quality standards.

IFP, Inc. (Innovative Food Processors) has been granted NSF International Certification for Dietary Supplement Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) for its largest plant in Faribault, Minnesota. This marks IFP's third consecutive certification for GMP with excellent ratings. Complying with NSF's GMP guidelines validates that IFP's manufacturing plan provides a system of processes, procedures and documentation that assures products produced in the plant have the identity, strength, composition, quality and purity they represent to possess.
