Rear View Mirror: MG MIDGET makes it's comeback.

Byline: Brian Twomey

NOT since the demise of the original Midget has MG had a small, truly affordable sports car to sell to young, aspirational lovers of the marque.

Next year that's all due to change because MG are dusting off the Midget name to create a new, sub MG TF sports-car that will most likely do battle with the Smart Roadster.

Aggressive pricing is likely when the new Midget hit's these shores before the end of '05.

Co-developed with Indian partners Tata, the first joint project being the CityRover, and based on a Tata concept car it will be made ready for production by IDEA.

IDEA are an Italian design firm. Thought to have a 1.6 100-110bhp K-Series engine the Midget may boast relatively modest performance figures but it's mid-engined layout will almost guarantee sharp handling.

It will need it because the Smart Roadster, the Midget's most obvious rival, is very good indeed.
