Reader's choice.

Citadel by Kate Mosse Set in a France invaded in AD 342 and 1942, this is the story of Citadel - a mainly female resistance group.

The parallel stories of love, sacrifice and bravery tell of their courage and the savagery women had to endure.

It keeps the reader guessing as to the threads that tie the characters together, although the events are 1,600 years apart.

It's so well written it's difficult to tell fact from fiction and Mosse describes the area of Languedoc so well that I feel as if I've been there.

If you only ever read one collection of fiction in your life, make it Kate Mosse's trilogy of Labyrinth, Sepulchre and Citadel.
