READ, Cornelia. Field of darkness. Read by Hillary Huber. 9 cds. 11 hrs. Blackstone Audiobooks. 2006. 0-7861-6746-7. $81.00. Vinyl; plot, author, reader, notes. SA

Madeline Dare hates living in Syracuse, where she writes local pieces for the newspaper. Happily married, she is far from her upbringing as a member of a Long Island high-society WASP family. When her favorite cousin is connected to a 20-year-old murder case, Dare turns sleuth to uncover the truth and clear his name. Huber portrays the main character's "attitude" perfectly, reading with a wry wit and self-deprecating humor. Her other voices match each individual's background, from Date's husband's farm family to her own family's upper-crust snobbishness. Older teens and adults with a taste for a combination of mystery and humor will find both in this well-narrated novel. Sue Rosenzweig, Consultant, Lincoln, RI
