Re: 'pregnancy no help to rape victims' by Dr. Gail Robinson, National Post, 22 NOV. 2012.

As a fellow health professional who has likewise taken the Hippocratic Oath that urges us to "do no harm," I was saddened to see Dr. Gail Robinson continues to promote the sinister culture of death, with over 100,000 Canadian pre-born babies killed every year.

The book Women's Health after Abortion: The Medical and Psychological Evidence by Ring-Cassidy and Gentles clearly shows the extensive research on post-abortion difficulties, contrary to Dr. Robinson's opinions. One prestigious study that stands out is based on the records of almost 600,000 women in Finland, from 1987 to 1997, and was published in the British Medical Journal in 1996 and 1997. It discovered a suicide rate among women who aborted that was three times greater than the general suicide rate (34.9 vs. 11.3 per 100,000 women) and nearly six times greater than among women who delivered their babies (34.9 vs. 5.9).

They concluded that "child bearing prevents suicide" and that the increased risk of suicide after abortion may indicate "the harmful effects of abortion on mental health." Rather than being a relief, an abortion may be additional proof of a feeling of worthlessness and contribute to the decision to commit suicide.

Furthermore, the researchers noted that only 11% of the suicides following pregnancy had this connection reported in the death certificate, indicating massive underreporting of suicides as an outcome of pregnancy, particularly following an abortion.

Dismissing the well-researched risks of abortion as Dr. Robinson does not only damages our public health but erodes our trust in people of authority (politicians included) who wilfully ignore the truth and deny the dignity of human life from conception to natural death.
