Rawthorpe Amateur Boxing Club are in the running for a prestigious national award.

The Gas Club-based outfit, now six years old, are one of six on the final shortlist for the Central Council for Physical Recreation Sports Club of the Year award.

The winner will pocket a cool pounds 6,000, with pounds 3,000 going to the runners-up and pounds 1,000 to the third-placed club.

The result will be announced at a special dinner hosted by Prince Philip in London on Thursday.

Rawthorpe, who will be represented at the dinner at the Hilton by coach and sports development officer Mark Reynolds and his wife Jill, the club secretary, are the first boxing club to get this far.

Their rivals for the award are Nottingham Gymnastics Club, Warwickshire and Coventry Orienteering Club, Sheffield Sharks Ski Club, the Queens Badminton Club, Devon and Wath Brow Hornets Rugby League Club from Cumbria.

"The nomination is great news," said Reynolds.

"It reflects the great work done not only in the boxing ring but throughout the whole community with all the different groups we are dealing with, such as schools, Young Offenders, Huddersfield Pride and the Police Community Clubs of Great Britain."

Last year, Rawthorpe were runners-up in the British Urban Regeneration Association Awards, given for the best schemes to give rundown areas new hope and objectives.

The club have more than 250 members, with 30 boxers competing regularly and have established an exchange programme with the Seychelles national boxing team.

Rawthorpe have produced national ABA finalists, a British University Champion and an England schoolboy representative.
