Graduate Studies in Mathematics; Volume 186

Poonen introduces graduate mathematics students to the vast field of rational points by surveying many topics briefly and pointing to the literature for readers who want to learn more about any particular one. Prerequisites are algebraic geometry, algebraic number theory, and some group cohomology. He provides about half again as much material as will fit in one semester, he says. His topics include varieties over arbitrary fields, faithfully flat descent, algebraic groups, cohomological obstructions to rational points, and surfaces. ([umlaut] Ringgold, Inc., Portland, OR)
