Rare footage of a snow leopard was shot in China after a photographer set up a hidden camera in the mountains.

The 30-second long video, was filmed by a infrared camera hidden in the 4,600-meter-high Burhan Budai Mountains.

The curious snow leopard is seen sniffing around the rock and walks up to the infrared camera.

Wildlife photographer Matse Rangja said despite being an avid wildlife photographer for eight years, he has seen snow leopards with his eyes just once.

Snow leopards are cryptic and hard to spot in the wild.

Rangja checked for snow leopards' footprints and excrement because these could prove if they visited the area.

Once he found the footprints he would just hide his camera in nearby rocks.

In China snow leopards are under state-level protection, there are only 5,000 to 7,000 leopards in the world, according to statistics.
