RAPID GROWTH IN SERVICE INDUSTRIES

The 1987 Census of Service Industries is now available from the Bureau of the Census. Conducted every five years, the census provides data on 1.6 million taxable and 176,000 nontaxable service establishments--including, for the first time, details on hospitals.

Dramatic growth has continued in the service sector. Receipts for taxable establishments other than hospitals rose to over $772 billion, up 76% from the 1982 census and 89% from the 1977 census.

Three states accounted for over $100 billion of the $325 billion increase. California was up $58 billion, New York $30 billion and Florida $21 billion.

Business services were the largest group, with receipts of over $217 billion, a 103% gain from 1982. The fastest growing components of business services were computer software, up 232%, and help supply services, up 212%.

Medical doctors' services were the largest group in individual services, up 65% to $84 billion in receipts. Legal services were second, with receipts of $67 billion, up 95%. Accounting, auditing and bookkeeping services were somewhat smaller, with receipts of nearly $25 billion; they recorded a satisfactory growth rate of 68%.

The report is available at $11 per copy, prepaid, from the Superintendent of Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington D.C. 20402. Mention stock number 803-029-00052-1 when ordering.
