Rankine saves the day.

MAIDENHEAD UTD 1 ALDERSHOT 1 MICHAEL RANKINE came off the bench to spare Aldershot's blushes and disappoint FA Cup romantics.

Maidenhead beat Marlow in one of the first four FA Cup matches in 1871, and, at the same York Road ground 140 years on, Anthony Thomas had the Blue Square Bet South strugglers dreaming of a famous upset. But Rankine, who lifted the visitors after his half-time introduction, ensured Dean Holdsworth's League Two side will be in the hat for round two 12 minutes from time. Maidenhead went in front from their first attack in the seventh minute.

The ball broke from the Aldershot box to Thomas on the left flank and he curled impeccably into the top corner.

Shots' Peter Vincenti and Scott Davies made way for Alex Rodman and Rankine at half-time. Rankine made a nuisance of himself in the box, heading down a Ben Herd free-kick for Danny Hylton to thrash wide.

The Magpies hit back and should have doubled their advantage in the 53rd minute when the unmarked John Scarborough headed into the side-netting. But Aldershot's pressure continued and the half-time replacements combined to level matters. Rodman's right-wing cross found Rankine, who converted his sixth goal of the season.
