Rakuten opens online shopping mall via tie-up with Chinese firm.

TOKYO, Oct. 19 Kyodo

Rakuten Inc. said Tuesday it has launched an online shopping mall through a tie-up with Baidu Inc., the biggest Chinese Internet search engine.

The virtual shopping mall, called Lekutian, has started operations with some 2,000 Japanese and Chinese stores, said the largest online shopping mall operator in Japan.

At present, leading Chinese online retailer Taobao, which has tied up with Yahoo Japan Corp., operates the biggest online shopping mall in China.

The Rakuten-Baidu partnership hopes to close in on Taobao by offering reliable products through strict screening of shops and elimination of bogus copies, Rakuten officials said.
