Raising a glass to steel heritage.

TAKE a look around the newest addition to Redcar's nightlife scene...

Steel Bay, next to the Plimsoll Line pub on High Street, is the brainchild of Redcar photographer and entrepreneur Paul Kitchener.

With his Cuban-themed bar La Rum Bar already open at the other end of town - the so-called "Northern Quarter" - Paul turned to his Teesside roots as the theme for Steel Bay.

Fitted out with an "industrial" factory-style look, complete with reclaimed steel tables and stainless steel-topped bar, Steel Bay - housed in a former tropical fish shop - is a nod to the town's steel-making heritage.

And among its most eye-catching features are three stunning wall-size photos Paul took himself.

The photos, which show the Paddy's Hole natural harbour, a view across Coatham marshes of the Redcar blast furnace and a fisherman at the iconic South Gare huts, were deliberately chosen to reflect the area's rugged beauty.

And Paul feels the photos, and the work carried out to transform the place, has made the industrial concept come to life.

He said: "My grandad worked in the steelworks and it's a tribute to him, and to everyone who worked there over the years.

"We've only been open since August 5 and the reaction has been brilliant. We've been getting lots of five star reviews on Facebook, which is fantastic.

"The general feeling is it's just what Redcar needed, something fresh on the High Street."
