Immerse yourself in color when you make this gorgeous quilt. Quick piecing and simple applique shapes make for a fast, fun project.

Enjoy going through your scraps or charm squares to pick out just the right fabrics for each block. Our instructions call for 3/8-V2 yard of assorted fabrics in each of nine different color families. When choosing scraps, know that for each color family you'll need nine 4" squares for the appliques, plus a 7" x 14" piece for the frame. It's okay to cut multiple hearts from one fabric or to cut each heart from a different fabric; it's up to you!

Notice that the center of each block is a different color from the hearts in that block. Arrange your centers as Carolyn did, or make color pairings as you wish.

1 Referring to Diagram I-A, sew 2 matching red 10 1/2" strips to sides of black solid 10 1/2" square. Sew matching 12 1/2" strips to top and bottom to make framed square. Follow manufacturer's instructions for paper-backed fusible web. Trace Templates A and B on paper side of fusible web. Cut apart, leaving small margin beyond drawn lines. Fuse to wrong side of appropriate fabrics; cut out on drawn lines. Finger press framed square in half on length, width, and both diagonals; use folds as placement guide. Referring to Diagram I-B, position orange A in center of square. Arrange red Bs around orange A so that hearts just touch one another. Fuse all in place to make red Framed Hearts Block. Make 1.

2 Referring to Diagram II, make remaining blocks in color arrangements and quantities shown.

3 Use machine blanket stitch and matching thread to edge-stitch applique shapes (Diagram III).

4 Note: Refer to Assembly Diagram for following steps. Sew 3 rows of 3 blocks each. Stitch rows together.

5 Sew black 44" strips to sides; trim even with top and bottom. Sew remaining 44" strips to top/bottom; trim even with sides. In same manner, sew remaining borders to quilt, adding side strips first for each border and trimming even after each addition.

6 Layer, baste, and quilt. Carol used black thread to machine quilt hearts, circles, black squares, and black border strips in the ditch. She used a clear monofilament thread to stitch in the ditch between blocks. Black thread was used to quilt a meander across the 3 borders. Bind with black solid.
