Railway and encroachers.
Byline: K.M. Shafi - Karachi
THIS refers to the photo published on the front page (Metro South, June 1). The caption of the picture said that 'children running across the railway tracks on Sunday may not be conscious of the danger they expose themselves to' and added that the railway authorities were indifferent to people's lives.
Every inch of land on both sides of railway tracks - from City Station to Landhi - has been illegally occupied by land grabbers. While elders sit on railway tracks during loadshedding, their children play and roam around railway tracks. Railway authorities cannot build an iron fence on both sides of railway all along 1,500km tracks from Karachi to upcountry.
As train has to run on tracks, it has no other option. It has right of way on railway tracks. It is, therefore, the responsibility of parents, who have encroached upon the railway land along tracks to guide and warn their children not to play on railway lines and throw stones on running trains.
