Rahi: How can a dignified candidate accept unconstitutional basket of conditions?
NNA - Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Beshara Rahi, held Sunday sermon from Bkirky during which he wondered how can any self-respecting presidential candidate impose a "basket of understanding" that bypasses the Constitution. "With our full appreciation and encouragement to all efforts to elect a president for the republic...we hear of a conditional basket of understanding as the sole pathway to the elections. Does this so-called basket replace the Constitution and national charter?" asked Rahi, asserting that abiding by the Constitution and national pact made the "basket" redundant and pointless. "If this basket had to be, then one thing should be made clear: the commitment of all political and parliamentary blocs to the higher national interest." Rahi condemned all other issues placed in said basket as "pointless" and could not be suggested or resolved in the absence of a head of state. "How can any candidate with dignity... strip himself from his Constitutional responsibilities by accepting an unconstitutional basket of conditions to be imposed upon him?" ============R.Z.
