Rafa Benitez believes some of his players are struggling with confidence issues after a bad start to the Sky Bet Championship season.
The Magpies were beaten by Huddersfield Town at St James' Park in front of a full house on a deeply disappointing afternoon on Tyneside.
United must now dust themselves down for their midweek game with Reading as the gruelling nature of life in the second flight begins to set in. They have another three league games and an EFL Cup tie to come before August is over.
By then Benitez hopes his players have adjusted to life back in the Football League. When asked if confidence might be a problem he said: "Maybe for some of them.
"It may be affecting some players and that's why we aren't playing at the level we can play.

"Some players have enough quality to play well. It's not just about the Championship being difficult but this team have enough quality to play better.
"We were expecting a lot of teams coming here and playing the same way. It's not what they do, it's what we do."
But he said he hadn't lashed out at his team after the defeat.
He said: "When you lose everybody is disappointed and I was really disappointed because we made too many mistakes.
"Especially with things they are doing in training sessions but not doing in games. They can do it, so we have to do it in matches."
Now, he hopes that his players with Championship experience will help carry the team in the next few games.
He said: "Some of them have experience and they know this level is quite difficult.
"It should not be a surprise especially after Fulham. We didn't do what we had to do because some players need more confidence."
