Network Increases Distribution with Coverage of the 5th Largest

U.S. Hispanic Market

Radio Unica (, the first Spanish-language radio network in the United States, announced that it is "on the air" in Chicago on radio station WYPA 820 AM, increasing its distribution to cover the 5th largest U.S. Hispanic market. Through an agreement with Personal Achievement Radio of Illinois Inc., Radio Unica began broadcasting its network programming and exclusive coverage of the 1998 World Cup on 820 AM's full-market signal.

With the addition of Radio Unica 820 AM, the new name of the station, the company now owns and/or operates 9 stations, all of which are in the top ten U.S. Hispanic markets. Chicago is home to more than 1.1 million Hispanics that make up approximately 13 percent of the total market population.

"The addition of Chicago to our station roster is an important part of our distribution goals," said Joaquin Blaya, CEO and Chairman of Radio Unica Corp. He added, "We look forward to building one of the top-rated stations in Chicago and filling the void in the market for high-caliber Spanish language programming."

Radio Unica's star-based programming line-up includes such elements as contemporary-themed talk shows hosted by internationally known personalities such as Pedro Sevcec, Dr. Isabel Gomez-Bassols, Mauricio Zeillio, Rebeca Rambal, and Luis Loria; sports talk featuring exclusive play-by-play coverage of World Cup-France '98 hosted by Jorge Ramos and other top names in sports broadcasting; and newscasts on the hour, 24 hours a day. Unique to Radio Unica's format is listeners' ability to interactively participate via toll-free phone lines.

Radio Unica, which launched on Jan. 5, 1998, is the first long-form, Spanish-language national news-talk, sports and information radio network in the United States. Radio Unica's exclusive World Cup broadcast will air from June 10th through July 12th. The network recently sponsored "Mundial Al Millon," a comprehensive promotion that included a consumer contest with a prize pool of over $1,000,000. The winner of the contest will be announced live, on the air during the World Cup. With 9 owned and/or operated stations and more than 50 affiliates across the United States, Radio Unica has fast become a leading force in the United States Hispanic media landscape.
