These days the biggest bands may well be put together by cynical marketing supremos looking for a cute-looking, squeaky-clean package that can dance and sing along to other people's songs. But the history of rock music is full of bands put together by and of musicians who turn up at auditions after trawling the pages of the NME's classified section. Here Steve Lamacq hears of some weird routes into band membership - including Elastica bassist Annie Holland, who turned up at audition having never played bass before.
