Once someone receives a diagnosis of cancer, the next step is to determine what treatment options are available. Trying to locate the most skilled and compassionate care possible can be a challenge. The physicians and support staff at Radiation Oncology Centers (ROC) provide the personal and expert care patients seek.

Over the last 27 years, ROC has grown into one of the largest freestanding radiation treatment facilities on the West Coast of Florida, with additional centers in Venice, Englewood and Port Charlotte. Radiation Oncology Centers are staffed by four board-certified radiation oncologists, who offer more than 80 years of combined experience in cancer management.

Alan Porter, M.D., F.A.C.R--listed among the "Best Doctors in America for 2002"--directs Radiation Oncology Centers. "Since unique conditions exist for each patient, we strive to personalize the treatment approach for each individual," he says. "Our focus centers around providing the most effective combination of treatment modalities. Working together with area physicians, our goal is to minimize side effects and complications for our patients. Most patients do not realize that many forms of cancer can be treated with radiation therapy only. High-energy X-ray beams are used to destroy the cancerous cells' ability to grow. Modern cancer care is best achieved when the three major forms of cancer treatment--surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy--are used in concert with each other for the maximum benefit of the patient."

Radiation Oncology Centers pioneers many new cancer treatments right here in our community. In 1978 Dr. Porter offered the first prostate seed implantations. In 1992 Dr. Stephen Colder offered the "Seattle" technique, which is an advanced treatment that utilizes ultrasound technology.

Cutting-edge technology at ROC includes the new Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT). "IMRT's 3-D diagnostic images reveal disease activity and then match the image with the appropriate treatment. This therapy allows us to avoid healthy organs as we precisely place higher dosages of radiation beams directly into tumors to help stop the spread of the disease," explains Dr. Porter. "This therapy minimizes side effects and complications while significantly increasing cure/control rates."

Radiation Oncology Centers, through an affiliation with Moffitt Cancer Center, participates in clinical trials, which are an important component in the research and development of new treatment options for cancer patients.
