Racing: Maumee can score.

Byline: PETER O'HEHIR

MAUMEE will be strongly fancied to land the listed Carlsberg Ruby Stakes on the second day of the Tralee Festival.

Trained by Dermot Weld, Maumee has been luckless since finishing fourth to Black Minnaloushe in the Entenmanns Irish 2,000 Guineas.

But he has performed creditably on three occasions in the intervening weeks, finishing third to Hawkeye in the Group 3 Desmond Stakes at the Curragh recently.

Prior to that effort, Weld's charge had failed narrowly to the same colt at the Curragh. And he's due a change of luck.

Maumee has made most of the running in recent starts. But champion-jockey Pat Smullen is likely to pounce late on this occasion.

He can land the spoils at the main expense of Aidan O'Brien's Hans Andersen.
