Race for net names. (Co-ops).

Co-operative societies across the country have been queuing up to reserve internet domain names with the suffix .coop before it is officially launched at the end of the month.

The Co-operative Group has registered welcome.coop, West Midlands Co-op has homeshopping.coop and groceries.coop; Leeds Co-op has food2go.coop and food2you.coop; and Oxford, Swindon and Gloucester Co-op has swiftshop.coop and storetodoor.coop.

It is hoped the .coop suffix will establish a stronger footing for the movement in cyberspace and differentiate the societies from dotcoms.

However, several societies have invested in developing sites with the more standard .co.uk domain name.

United Co-op said it would be "a long time before .coop becomes anything like as established as .co.uk".
