RYKOFF-SEXTON EXPECTS TO REPORT A NET LOSS
 FOR ITS FIRST FISCAL QUARTER
LOS ANGELES, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Rykoff-Sexton Inc. (NYSE: RYK) expects to report a net loss of approximately $130,000, or $.01 per share, for its first fiscal quarter ended Aug. 1, 1992, compared with net income of $3.2 million, or $.28 per share, earned for the corresponding prior year period. The definitive first quarter results will be released during the week of Sept. 14, 1992.
The company attributed the loss to reduced gross profit margin, increased expenses in warehousing and transportation, implementation of its new data processing system, higher interest expense and expenses connected with major distribution facility relocations in Philadelphia, Kansas City, Mo., St. Louis and Phoenix. Food price deflation had a negative impact for the period.
The company also attributed the results to continued weak market conditions, particularly in California and Arizona, which accounts for about 40 percent of Rykoff-Sexton's sales; the effects of the riots in Los Angeles; and costs associated with the recently announced restructuring of its two principal operating divisions.
The company expects benefits from its restructuring and cost cutting programs over the months ahead, including the elimination of a number of duplicate administrative functions, more centralized financial controls and better utilization of corporate resources.
