RYDER PROMOTES TIBBETS TO DIRECTOR-COMMERCE & GOVERNMENT RELATIONS

 MIAMI, Sept. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Dale A. Tibbets has been appointed director-commerce & government relations of Ryder System, Inc. (NYSE: R), it was announced here today by R. Charles Back, vice president-government relations. In his new position, Tibbets will direct Ryder's state lobbying activities in 13 midwestern states and also direct Ryder's motor carrier compliance activities throughout the United States and Canada.
 Tibbets joined Ryder in 1979 as manager-commerce in the company's former Specialized Transportation unit. In 1988, as Ryder began dealing more with state regulatory agencies, he moved to the Government Relations Department as manager-government relations, his most recent position.
 He has a bachelor of business administration degree in marketing from the University of North Texas and was admitted in 1978 to practice before the Interstate Commerce Commission.

By the end of 1993, after the company completes the already-announced spin off of its aviation segment, Ryder's focus will be entirely on highway transportation services.
