RUSSIAN SPACE CORPORATION HAILS NASA CONTRACT

RUSSIAN SPACE CORPORATION HAILS NASA CONTRACT
WASHINGTON, June 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Energia USA today hailed the

signing of the Soyuz study contract between NASA and NPO Energia of Russia as a first step in the integration of Russian space technology into the international business community.
The three-year contract, which could be worth a total of $10 million, will be announced today by NASA Administrator Dan Goldin and Russian Space Agency General Director Yuri N. Koptiev.
The contract calls for NPO Energia to conduct a series of technical studies for NASA on using different Russian space systems for the American space program. Of primary interest is the use of the Soyuz vehicle as a space ferry for NASA's space station Freedom.
Energia USA is the American subsidiary of the Russian space corporation NPO Energia. It is devoted to sales, marketing and locating strategic American business partners for the parent company NPO Energia.
Energia USA is promoting use of the Energia heavy-lift launch vehicle for launching Space Station Freedom and manned interplanetary missions.
"The Energia booster could deploy Space Station freedom in five launches," stated Jeffrey Manber, vice president of marketing for Energia USA. "Teamed with an American partner NPO Energia is ready to move beyond this first step and work to help lower the cost of doing business in space. A reduction in costs will help create a positive climate for more government and commercial space programs."
The contract is the latest in a number of commercial space contracts signed with U.S. organizations and corporations. "The Soyuz is only the tip of the technical iceberg," believes Christopher Faranetta, vice president of sales for Energia USA. "Russian space capabilities can help leverage many other existing U.S. space programs.
Energia USA was established four months ago by Yuri P. Semenov, the general director of NPO Energia, to coordinate U.S. interest in NPO Energia technology. These programs include the MIR space station, the Energia heavy-lift launch vehicle, the Soyuz spacecraft and the Buran space shuttle,
"NPO Energia is a productive partner for U.S. firms in the competitive world of space. This is an exciting opportunity for everyone," added Manber.
NPO Energia is a world-class space organization whose accomplishments include the first satellite (Sputnik), the first person in space (Yuri Gagarin), the first interplanetary probe (Lunar-1), the first space station (Salyut-1) and today the world's only permanently-crewed space station, the MIR.
