RURAL TELECOM PROJECT.

New Skies Satellites N.V., the global satellite communications company, on June 27 said that the new NSS-7 Atlantic Ocean region satellite will be used to link more than 500 towns and villages throughout the Dominican Republic for a rural telecommunications network currently being deployed by CODETEL, a Verizon company. Many of the communities involved will gain access to telephony and data services for the first time ever. CODETEL won the Government-sponsored rural telecom project with a proposal based on the technical specifications of NSS-7, including the satellite's high transmission power and comprehensive coverage, said Miguel Fadul, senior manager of international facilities for CODETEL. NSS-7 was launched on April 16, 2002 from the Guiana Space Center in French Guiana and commenced commercial services on May 30, 2002. Details: Elizabeth Hess, +31 70 306 4133.
