RUGBY Lions failed to show any of last season's form in losing to Midland rivals Leicester Lions by a decisive margin.

Rugby also ran foul of the referee too often to get into any rhythm.

Leicester took a secondminute lead through Jon Boden's penalty.

Rugby missed their first penalty attempt but James Hawken scored with his second kick for 3-3 on 15 minutes.

Some indecisive play by flyhalf Tommy Turner contributed to Boden's second penalty for 3-6 after 22 minutes. And on the half-hour, Boden added his third penalty, although Chris Murphy's try for Rugby made it 8-9.

Rugby failed to improve after the interval, conceding Will Twelvetrees' drop-goal and Boden's fourth penalty for 8-15 with eight minutes to play.

Rugby scored through Toby Handley but two interception tries by former Rugby player Gareth Collins saw the home side finally well-beaten.

SCORERS: Rugby - tries: Murphy, Handley; penalty: Hawken.

Leicester - tries: Collins (2); conversions: Boden (2); penalties: Boden (4); drop goal: Twelvetrees.
