RUGBY WORLD CUP 2003: LAPORTE OPEN WITH PLAUDITS; France 51 Japan 29.

FRENCH coach Bernard Laporte extended his congratulations to Japan after the Cherry Blossoms put up a heroic show in Townsville on Saturday.

``You have to congratulate Japan,'' saidLaporte.

``They had lots of speed and agility and put us under a lot of pressure.

``I had felt quite confident in the first half -but in the second they put us under a lot of pressure.''

Leading points-scorer Frederic Michalak will be fit after X-rays on the rib injury he picked up revealed nothing more than bruising.
