RUGBY UNION SOPHIE SPENCE has called time on her Ireland career after failing to make the 38-player squad for the Six Nations.

The 30-year-old has been part of the Irish senior set-up since 2012, but was a notable omission from head coach Andrew Grigg's panel yesterday.

"It is with regret that I am announcing my retirement. I had hoped to finish my career after playing in one last Six Nations, but it is not to be," said Spence who was a World Rugby player of the year nominee in 2015. "I have been incredibly proud to pull on the Irish jersey and to play for Ireland alongside such talented team mates."
