RUGBY UNION: LIONS IN NEW ZEALAND: REDKNAPP'S SUPPORT FOR WOODWARD.

HARRY REDKNAPP is backing Sir Clive Woodward to restore his battered reputation when he arrives as Southampton's technical director next month.

Rugby fan Redknapp used his club's first day of training to endorse Woodward's leadership qualities despite two heavy defeats for the Lions by the All Blacks.

"Clive is not coming in as a director of football and is not going to have any day-to-day involvement with the first team," said the Saints boss.

"I think he will have a lot to offer with the coaching and medical side of things. He wants to become a football manager one day and he wants to pick brains.

"Nobody is going to think less of Clive after what has happened in New Zealand.

"The All Blacks look fantastic to me, they look like they are on another level."

York City fan Woodward will come to St Mary's early next month in time for the start of the Championship season.

Redknapp added: "Football is his first love. Clive wants to learn the ropes and do his coaching badges."
