MACHETES, hatchets and iron bars stockpiled for use in the loyalist feud were seized by police yesterday.

The haul was recovered in the garden of a house in Malvern Way in the Shankill Road area of Belfast after reports of suspicious activity.

When police searched the house they also recovered a loaded blank-firing pistol.

Three men have been shot dead in the feud between UFF and UVF terror gangs. Almost 200 families have been forced from their homes in the Shankill area.

Tension between the groups escalated yesterday after John White, chairman of the Ulster Democratic Party, which speaks for the UFF, said the UFF were behind a bomb attack on a man in Bangor, Co Down.

Alexander Rice was seriously injured when a device exploded under his van on Monday.

Mr White said: "It has been indicated to me that this was an attempted murder directly linked to the feud and certainly marks a very serious departure - we are now seeing both sides using explosives."

David Ervine of the Progressive Unionist Party labelled Mr White's remarks as "dubious in the extreme", saying Mr Rice had been targeted over his stance on drugs.
