RUBBERMAID INVOLVED IN HUNGARIAN JOINT VENTURE
WOOSTER, Ohio, Dec. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Rubbermaid Incorporation

(NYSE: RBD) today announced its European affiliate, Curver Rubbermaid Group, has reached agreement in principle to form a joint venture with Pannonplast Group of Budapest, Hungary.
The business will be formed by Curver Rubbermaid Group and Pannonplast with 50 percent - 50 percent ownership. Terms were not disclosed. The name of the new organization will be Curver Rubbermaid Kft., with headquarters in Debrecen, Hungary. The business' primary market area will consist of Hungary, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia.
Walter W. Williams, Rubbermaid chairman of the board and chief executive officer, said, "Global expansion of Rubbermaid's activities into the former Iron Curtain countries illustrates how the world has changed so dramatically. Hungary is one of the more advanced and politically stable economies of the former Eastern Bloc countries and we are encouraged about the prospects for growth in this area."
Establishing this joint venture positions Curver Rubbermaid Group to aggressively pursue expansion in other Eastern European countries as opportunities become available.
"The announcement of this joint venture, coming on the heels of the announcement last week of our intention to acquire CIPSA in Mexico City, exemplifies our intentions to grow rapidly in the global marketplace," Williams continued. "Both agreements also demonstrate the potential for expansion opportunities worldwide."
"Pannonplast will make an ideal partner to learn and grow our European business," according to Wolfgang R. Schmitt, Rubbermaid president for chief operating officer. "The company is progressive, as shown by its move towards privatization from the government, and its shares have been traded on the Budapest stock market since June 1991. Its product line consists primarily of household utensils and containers, wastebaskets, buckets, laundry baskets and tubs. This is an excellent time to introduce both Rubbermaid and Curver-designed products to a market of some 40- to 50-million people."
Pannonplast Group is a holding company and its plastic household products business is the market leader in Hungary with 1991 consumer sales of $6 million (U.S.). The group's other businesses include plastic industrial products, pipe, PVC flooring and cosmetics packaging. Closing of the agreement is expected in early 1992 following Hungarian government approval.
When completed, the joint venture will become the second initiated by Curver-Rubbermaid Group. The first, Plast-Teknik Rubbermaid, serves the Scandinavian market.
Curver Rubbermaid Group was formed in January 1990 as a joint venture between Rubbermaid and the Dutch chemical conglomerate, DSM. The venture manufactures and markets plastic and rubber housewares and resin furniture for Europe, the Middle East and North Africa. It is comprised of Rubbermaid's former European housewares business and the prior Curver Housewares Group.
Curver Rubbermaid Group is headquartered in Breda, The Netherlands, and markets products under both the Rubbermaid and Curver Brands, and garden furniture under the Lawn Comfort and Curver names. Manufacturing and distribution centers are located in Austria, Belgium, England, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Spain, Switzerland and Scandinavia.
